Disposition of the mind

27 Hinduism (The forgotten facts) Disposing the mind By Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Mahaswamiji Mind refuses to be disposed off. What exactly is this mind? It is the instrument which creates thoughts. If the creation of thoughts stops, mind will also not be there. But we are not able to stop the creation of thoughts. All the time it is galloping to go somewhere. We go through lots of experiences and enjoyments. We also keep seeing them; those of this birth that we know, and many more in the other births that we do not know. Each of them has left an impression in our mind. They keep running in our mind and sprout numberless thoughts. It is like the smell that persists in the bottle in which we kept spicy asafoetida. So also even after we have gone through experiences and enjoyments, their smell persists in our mind. This is what is called VAsanA, or JanmAntara VAsanA (VAsanA that comes from other births), or SamskAra VAsanA. What does it do? It keeps surfacing thoughts about t...

To Tell the truth

Tip: If you tell the truth, you will never have to remember what you said! The title of this Tip is something that I am sure most of us have heard many times. The first person who ever said it to me was my father.   Most of us had parents who tried to instill in us the importance of telling the truth.  When I was growing up, I asked my father what he meant when he often told me that if you tell the truth, you will never have to remember what you said.  He explained, “The human mind is designed to remember events as they actually happen.  When you are involved in a situation and tell the truth about it, if time passes and you are asked about the same situation later, your mind will recall the truth about what happened at the time of the original event.  If, however, you have not told the truth, you will have to also remember exactly what you said so that you can recall that same story next time.  And, the more lies you tell, the more confused you wi...

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, can be found in the verses of Rig Veda and also recurs in Yajur Veda. Since, the Mantra is addressed to Tryambaka (the three-eyed one), it is also known as Tryambakam Mantra.  The Mantra is also known as Rudra mantra (Rudra is the fiercest form of Lord Shiva) and Mrita- Sanjivini mantra . The Mantra was revealed by Sage Markendaya and is considered as the secret mantra that has saved the sage from Yama the Hindu God of Death.  There is a legend which depicts that with the power of this Mahamritunjaya Mantra, Markendaya was protected by Lord Shiva from death. Mrikandu rishi and his wife Marudmati, the parents of sage Makendeya, were great devotees of Lord Shiva and they prayed for a son to the Lord. Lord was pleased in their worship and gave the childless parents two options to choose from. They can either have an intelligent son with short life, or a son with less intelligence but with a long life. The parents opted for the first choice and their...

How to visit a temple

When I sat down to write a post on how to visit a Hindu temple, I’ll admit that I was initially baffled. How does one visit a Hindu temple? In a literal sense, it appears obvious. First, get yourself to one. Second, take off your shoes, and third, step in. Visit, in the most fundamental sense of the word, accomplished. A visit anywhere, though, is so much more than just the physical action of stepping in and stepping out. The significance varies from one individual to the next. A vacation to Spain or a business trip to Detroit sound vastly different, but both involve the individual going through the motions of life in a given location and concocting a mental snapshot of the entire experience to pull out in the future. A trip’s purpose doesn’t always have concrete shape and form. Because many might not have a tangible reason for visiting a Hindu temple (including myself on many occasions), I instead decided to make this a Lonely Planet-style guide to visiting ...

Who is a real Guru

” Who is Real Guru…” ? “Once Sri Chandrasekhara Saraswati Swami of Kanchi Mutt (Sri Periyava) had camped in North India. The then Prime Ministe, Smt. Indira Gandhi, came to have His darshan. The Prime Minister of India placed a similar question in front of Sri Periva, “If you would pinpoint the persons who, in the name of spirituality, lead the people in a wrong way I will take action against them.” Sri Periva laughed and said, “No! It should not be handled in this manner. Those who approach such fake swamis will themselves, after a time, understand their standard of maturity.” Sri Periva knew that this reply did not satisfy Smt. Indira Gandhi. Someone had OFFERED a basket full of mangoes to Periva. It contained many unripe and a few ripe fruits. Many devotees waited outside for Sri Periva’s darshan. Sri Periva instructed the attendants to bring a child from amongst these devotees. A child of about 5 years was brought to Him. Pointin...

Shiva and Shani

It would be difficult to debate Shiva’s connection with yoga as there are numerous commentaries and teachings from him regarding yoga, additionally, he is commonly referred to as Yogeswar, the lord of yoga.  Even while reading select puranas, it becomes apparent that Shiva has a strong connection with yoga/meditation as he is frequently referenced as meditating for long periods of time; his dress is that of a renunciant, and one should note his strong association with caves, mountain tops and other locations for meditation.  From a Shaivite (a follow of Shiva) perspective, it is Shiva’s meditation that upholds and transforms the universe.  It is his relationship with Durga/Parvati/Uma that gave rise to many forms within the realm of creation.   But more interestingly, it is Shiva’s relationship with Shani (Saturn) that is largely ignored yet applicable to students of modern Hinduism/Yoga/Spirituality. Within Vedic...

STORY OF GANESHA AS SCRIBE FOR VYASA

STORY OF GANESHA AS SCRIBE FOR VYASA Ganesha has agreed to be the scribe for Vyasa when the Mahabharat was dictated to him. In doing so, he set a condition to Vyasa that he ( Vyasa ) should dictate continuously and he agreed. Vyasa in turn set his own condition to Ganesha that he ( Ganesha ) should understand the schlokas before writing them down. During the writing the pen broke and Ganesha without stopping broke off one tusk and use it as a pen. A very interesting story. ONE INTERPRETATION ( there are others ) Any person writing a poem, an essay, an article etc. would have divided the mind into two parts. These are the " dictating mind " and the " mind that tells the hand what to write." It is like saying that part of the mind is Vyasa and the other part is Ganesha. If the dictating mind is too fast for the hand there will be mistakes and if the writing mind is too fast for the dictating mind there will be mistakes. As the story indicates, we must unde...
